First Look: Perdomo Edicion de Silvio
EDICIÓN de SILVIO®, hailed as the "crown jewel" of Perdomo's
family of cigar brands, was reverently created by Nick Perdomo, Jr. as a
living tribute to honor the memory of his late grandfather and mentor,
Silvio Perdomo. The brand is comprised of a masterful blend of exquisite
tobaccos the origins of which are a fiercely guarded secret known only to
the Perdomo family. Nick, Jr. declared the delicate blend lends "a new and
thrilling flavor characteristic that reminds my father of how 'real Cuban
cigars' were made before 1959. It is a work of love for my father and I -
and the finest cigar I've ever had the pleasure to experience."
The thick, luscious all-Cuban seed tobaccos, cultivated into a binder and
filler crop which Perdomo and grandfather Silvio began aging before his
passing in 1997, have been exclusively fermented in large, 50+-year old
vintage oak casks uniquely fashioned with Spanish cedar. These thick,
time-honored vessels were discovered by Nick, Jr. and his grandfather in
1995 on one of their many pilgrimages to the Jalapa Valley on a barren
tobacco farm that was confiscated and plundered by the Sandinista regime
in 1979. Cloistered in a heavily guarded aging chamber on the perimeter
of the Perdomo family production compound in Esteli, these distinctively
spice-laden "bins" were used to house the special tobaccos created for
"EDICIÓN de SILVIO®" under the explicit guidance of only four
members of the Perdomo family. "These special bins are one of the many
legacies of my grandfather. They lend an unbelievably smooth quality and
rich texture and taste to the cigar," stated Nick, Jr. Due to the
conservative yield of the original harvest and the painstaking, scrupulous
selection of only the finest tobaccos from that harvest, final production
is forecasted to be limited to only 50,000 cigars. Only five of the
factory's most elite torcedors are permitted to handcraft the
commemorative new brand honoring Silvio Perdomo's most cherished vitolas:
the "Robusto" (5" x 54); "Double Corona" (7 5/8" x 50) and "No. 2 Torpedo"
(6 1/8" x 54). Fifty cigars are meticulously sorted and delicately
stocked in an aerated, slide-top Spanish cedar caché surrounded by and
continuously exposed to the boldly fragrant "ribbons" of a 120-year old
Spanish cedar tree. These cedar "ribbons" are hand-carved from the rich,
oily heartwood of the tree, infusing an expressive aroma and a
distinctively elegant finish to each and every cigar. The wax-sealed
cigar caché and Spanish cedar "ribbons" are then concealed under lock and
key within a rustic "Spanish Galleon" tobacco chest.
According to Perdomo, EDICIÓN de SILVIO® is a smoking
experience that yields an impressive, robust taste with an undercurrent of
delicate, complex tones. "This cigar is an exacting blend of viso, alto
viso, ligero and seco tobaccos that my grandfather loved," recalled Nick,
Jr. "He told me this specific blend is a fusion of strength and
compassion which are qualities of not only a good cigar, but also of a
good and God-fearing man. My grandfather was a wonderful man, a respected
cigar artisan and a hero to my father and I. This was our last
collaboration together, and I'm reminded that we owe everything we are to
him."
